Alicante nightlife is relaxed and street activity continues well past midnight without feeling unsafe. Like any city, common sense applies: stick to populated areas, avoid unlit side streets, and keep an eye on your belongings. But genuinely, walking around Alicante at night feels comfortable compared to most European cities of similar size.
No. The Alicante crime rate is significantly lower than cities like London, Barcelona, Rome, and Nice — and lower than the Spanish national average for serious violent crime. Is Spain safe? Generally yes — and Alicante sits comfortably at the safer end of that scale. The most common issues tourists encounter are opportunistic petty theft in Alicante — pickpockets in crowded areas and bag snatches near beaches. Awareness and a few simple habits are all you need.
Yes — and solo travel in Alicante is consistently rated positively by women who visit. The vast majority of female solo travellers in Alicante report feeling safe walking around day and night, including on the beach and in the city centre. Isolated incidents of street harassment can occur as in any city, but physical attacks are rare. Standard precautions apply — stick to populated areas after dark, trust your instincts — but nothing beyond what you'd apply anywhere in Europe.

- Colonia Requena and 1000 Viviendas — the areas most consistently flagged by locals
- Juan XXIII — worth being cautious, especially after dark
- Carolinas Bajas — higher rates of drug-related activity
- La Florida and San Antón — known for higher robbery rates
Alicante is a genuinely family-friendly city in Spain — pedestrian areas, playgrounds, and calm beaches make it one of the easier places to travel with young children. Beaches and busy plazas get crowded in summer though, so keep kids within sight in busy spots like Postiguet Beach or the Central Market.
- One practical tip that most parents visiting Alicante with kids don't think about until it's too late: write your phone number on a slip of paper in your child's pocket or on a wristband. Simple, but worth doing.
Pickpockets in Alicante are real — not rampant, but worth knowing about. Crowded beaches, busy markets, and public transport are the main spots. A few simple habits are all you need:
- Hard-to-reach pockets: Keep your phone, wallet, and passport in internal pockets or a crossbody bag that stays in front of you.
- Backpack safety: Outer pockets are easily accessible from behind in crowds — don't keep anything valuable there.
- Phones on the Alicante TRAM or buses: Avoid holding your phone loosely near the doors. A common trick is for someone to grab it just as the doors are closing.
- Skip the expensive jewellery: Leaving high-end items in your hotel safe means one less thing to think about while you're out.
Driving in Alicante and around the Costa Blanca is one of the best ways to explore — but whether you're in a rental car in Alicante or your own vehicle, a few things are worth knowing before you set off.
- Empty cabin rule: Never leave any items visible inside the car — not a bag, a jacket, or loose change. Rental car break-ins in Spain happen and insurance may cover the window, but the hours spent filing police reports and swapping cars will ruin your day. Keep the interior completely empty.
- Roadside distractions: Be cautious if strangers try to flag you down on the highway, even if they seem to be pointing at a fault with your car. This is a known scam on Spanish roads. Drive to a well-lit, busy petrol station before stopping to check.
- Petrol station vigilance: Thefts at petrol stations in Spain happen in seconds. Never leave your car unlocked or unattended — especially with children or valuables inside.
