Hogueras de San Juan 2026

Seven mascletàs. Bonfires taller than buildings. And at midnight on June 24 — the whole city burns.
"Hogueras is a truly unique local festival — and yes, tourists come from all over to see it. But let me be honest with you: this is a loud festival. Music and firecrackers — thrown by kids and adults alike — will keep going until 3 or 4 in the morning. Traffic in the centre gets seriously disrupted too, so think twice about where you book your hotel and what you do with your car. Now let's get to the good part — keep reading."

What Are the Hogueras de San Juan?

Every June, Alicante transforms. Streets fill with enormous satirical sculptures — some reaching several storeys high — built by local neighbourhood commissions over months of work. These are the Hogueras: elaborate papier-mâché and wood monuments, each telling a story through humour, political commentary, or pure artistic ambition.

The festival is rooted in the ancient tradition of midsummer bonfires celebrating the night of Saint John. Alicante took that tradition and turned it into something entirely its own — earning the designation of International Tourist Interest, one of the highest honours a Spanish festival can receive.

But Hogueras isn't just about the monuments. It's a full calendar of events stretching from early June through the end of the month. Daily drum-and-firework displays called mascletàs shake the Plaza de los Luceros at 2pm sharp. Neighbourhood associations open their barracas — decorated party spaces — every evening. Parades, flower offerings, folk dancing, and live music fill the streets day and night.

The emotional centrepiece comes at midnight on June 24th. A giant firework palm tree is launched from the top of Monte Benacantil, signalling the start of the Nit de la Cremà — the Night of the Burning. Every single monument in the city, months of work and craftsmanship, is set on fire simultaneously. What took a year to build disappears in an hour. That contrast — creation and destruction, beauty and fire — is what makes Hogueras unlike any other festival in Europe.

And if that's not enough, the city keeps going. An International Fireworks Competition runs nightly from June 25th to 29th on the waterfront, closing out one of the most intense weeks on the Spanish calendar.
