The
Explanada de España is one of the better places in
Alicante to eat — not because the restaurants are exceptional, but because the setting is hard to beat. Five hundred metres of marble promenade between the port and the city centre, terraces facing the Mediterranean, and the kind of atmosphere that makes a simple coffee feel like an event.
What to order: Classic Spanish tapas — patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo, fresh seafood from the Alicante fish market. Budget
€20–30 per person for a full meal with a drink at a mid-range spot. Coffee and a pastry on a terrace:
€3–4.
When to go: The Explanada dining scene peaks between
21:00 and 23:00 — when locals actually eat dinner in Spain. Arrive at 19:00 and you'll have your pick of tables. Summer weekends after 22:00 are busy — expect to wait at the better spots.
Three things worth knowing:- Restaurants directly on the promenade charge 20–30% more than identical places one street back — you're paying for the view
- The menú del día (set lunch) is available Monday to Friday at most restaurants — typically €20–25 for three courses including a drink
- Avoid anywhere with a laminated photo menu in four languages and someone standing outside trying to pull you in
